Nigel Paine says that trust is everything in our volatile world.
“The greatest business lesson I’ve ever learnt is that ultimately you have no business without trust.
Trust to me has become more and more important in my career.
If I can’t trust companies, if I can’t trust individuals, if I can’t trust staff, I’m more likely to walk than I would have been previously.
So business to me is about creating networks of trust. And to create networks of trust, you’ve got to give trust. But you don’t give trust naively.
I think you’ve got to test trust and make sure that trust is mutual on both sides.
Where there is trust on both sides, that’s when you’re really powerful, that’s when you really move fast, that’s when things start to happen.
Business that’s not founded on that critical area of trust is very rocky and actually quite unpleasant, because everything is done with due diligence and slight hostility and suspicion.
It’s quite threatening if you think someone’s trying to do you if you don’t do them. It’s not a very pleasant environment to operate in.”
